Speak Up is a multi-magazine (a set of magazine, multimedia and audio CD) that aims to improve and to keep in shape the English-language knowledge of its readers. It does so by means of international articles on general-interest subjects such as news, politics, American and British culture (and that of other English-speaking countries), entertainment, music, interviews, literature, and travel and tourism.A brief introduction in Portuguese and a glossary with the translation of the most difficult words follow all stories. Interviews are recorded with the actual voices of interviewees, which together with the special care given to photos help the reader to feel as if he were in the real, English-speaking environment. The articles are not didactic in themselves, being written in native English by American and British journalists. Besides that, there are one or two stories per issue written in "basic and intermediate English," so that a larger number of Brazilians can
understand the magazine. Thus Speak Up readers improve their English while getting informed, without having to make a special effort to do so.Speak Up has been published in Brazil by Editora Peixes since 1987, coming out every four weeks and reaching an average, nationwide circulation of 30,000 copies, sold at U$ 6 each. |
